Body building and repairs of all types were growing rapidly and so during 1965 involvement in the municipal business began, quite by chance. Having waited three months for spares from Dennis Brothers Ltd, for a vehicle belonging to Royal Borough of Sutton Coldfield, John Allen under instruction from his father not to come back without the spare parts decided to tackle the manufacturers head-on. The customer needed the vehicle and the space where it stood was required for other work.
Arriving at Dennis, John was informed that they had not got the spare parts. Not deterred and seeing it was lunch time and the production line deserted John took a walk around the factory and found the spares he required. With the spares in his vehicle and parked some distance away John went back to the factory to explain what he had done and ask for a bill for the amount owing. Needless to say John was told he could not do that but refused to hand back the spares. Following a series of meetings with senior Dennis people he was hauled before the Managing Director. John explained his position and an invoice was raised. Shortly afterwards Jack Allen (Motor Bodies) Ltd was appointed as Midland distributor's for Dennis vehicles covering an area from Derbyshire to Oxfordshire. With this appointment meant, for the first time, going into mechanical repair and overhaul work including a spare-parts department. It was at this point that the first Dennis Paxit refuse vehicle was sold. Success continued and new employees were taken on, equipment installed and stocks purchased. |
